The hedonic treadmill is the tendency for happiness to remain relatively constant and stable, even after major positive or negative life changes. If you receive a six-figure salary, you’re likely to enjoy it for only a while until your financial ambitions emerge once again, emboldened. Your happiness, in effect, returns to where it was and this manifests in your goals and motivations. The reality, as we often discover and like so many other things in life, is that happiness is relative. Cross that one thing off and you'll be happy, right? The implication of this common line-of-thinking is that happiness is an end goal, almost comparable to the self-actualisation of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs if you like your classic psychology. These are all things we’re likely familiar with – so intimately it’s painful in my case – and almost everybody will have felt they’re just missing that one component. If only that cute girl or guy in your class looked at you the same way you looked at the back of their head. If you could only just get that promotion.
